The Motorcycle Test

THEORY

This is only necessary if you wish to book the practical test - it is not required if you only want a CBT or ride a 125 with 'L' plates.

The theory test comprises 2 elements, namely the Theory questions and the Hazard Perception video clips. There are 35 multi-choice questions and 30 of these must be answered correctly within 40 minutes. After a break of minutes the Hazard Perception element follows, which is a series of video clips of normal riding/driving situations where you are required to click the mouse when you see a hazard and then again when you see it develop further. There are 15 clips and you have 20 minutes to complete this section. Speed of response is important here, with a maximum 5 points available for each clip giving a total possible score of 75. The pass mark is 38.

HAZARD PERCEPTION TEST

This part of the theory test requires you to view 14 hazard video clips on a computer screen of approximately one minute each. You are required to watch these clips as if you were the driver. There will be 15 hazards to find - at least one on each clip. However, one clip will have 2 hazards. More information about the Hazard Perception Test is available at the DirectGov website.

PRACTICAL TEST

This is conducted in Peterborough (other centres by special arrangement which will attract extra cost) by a DSA examiner who, as during your training, will give you instructions over a radio link. They usually follow you on a bike but may have to use a car, for a variety of reasons. The test takes approximately 33 minutes, where you will be required to demonstrate your ability to handle your machine in varying road and traffic conditions and ride safely and competently.

Prior to the ride you will be asked 2 questions relating to routine checks that you should make on your machine. After the ride the examiner will ask 1 or 2 questions regarding carrying a pillion passenger.
